PETALING JAYA: Many Malaysians have been charmed by Astro’s home-made Malaysian Boy music video which drew over 97,000 hits on YouTube in the past week.

Featuring scenes of vibrant city life and sleepy village roads, the video is about a group of young Malaysians who work together to build and paint giant mysterious jigsaw pieces in bright blue, white, yellow and red.

They then carry the pieces to Stadium Merdeka and fit them together to make the Malaysian flag.

Their efforts are accompanied by a local version of Estelle’s popular American Boy song with new lyrics in Malay, English, Cantonese and Tamil.

Astro chief operating officer Henry Tan said some of the lyrics were written by the artistes themselves – Altimet, Point Blanc, Rabbit Mac and DJ Fuzz.

“We gave them the freedom to come up with youth-centric Malaysian lyrics and encouraged them to write about what Malaysia was to them,” he said.

Tan said Estelle’s song was chosen because of its appeal and “it was time we had a Malaysian version”.

He said the video, completed in just 10 days, was to encourage Malaysians to “chill” and have some fun.

“We just thought it would be nice for the Merdeka and Malaysia Day celebrations to remind ourselves what makes us special, which is our unique diversity and harmony,” he said.

The video is part of Astro’s Suara Kami 2011 Concert and Carnival on Sept 17 which will be held from 12pm at Stadium Merdeka.
